Frequently Asked Questions

01

Are speech, language, and literacy disorders curable?

More severe speech disorders, like apraxia and dysarthria, along with language and literacy disorders are not curable; they are life-long disorders. With good intervention, though, most clients can make tremendous growth in their skill level and strategy usage to live happy and successful lives without feeling held back by speech-language-learning challenges.

02

Why are speech-language pathologists the best professionals to support people with dyslexia and other learning differences?

Reading and writing are, at their core, language skills. Certified speech-language pathologists are highly trained in treating the foundational skills necessary to successfully read and write. We are trained to interpret and apply research and assessment results in our everyday clinical work, ensuring that your child always receives the most up-to-date and evidence-based intervention possible.

03

Do you use Orton-Gillingham?

Orton-Gillingham is an approach and philosophy, not a program. The tenets of an OG approach are that instruction is multi-sensory, structured, direct, sequential, cumulative, diagnostic, flexible, and language-based. These tenets are integral to the intervention we provide. We at DC SLLC feel strongly about pulling from our toolbox of programs, methodologies, and skills to cater exactly to what your child needs. Therefore, we don't implement one specific Orton-Gillingham aligned program because no one program serves all people. Instead, we create individualized intervention programs for our clients based on their unique learning profiles using the science of reading as our guide. Our intervention is multi-linguistic and speech-to-print. More on that here.

04

My child needs an evaluation. Do I see a psychologist or a speech-language pathologist?

If your main concerns are related to speech, oral language, reading, and/or writing, an evaluation from a speech-language pathologist would be appropriate. If you are looking to learn more about your child's entire cognitive profile, including their attention, behavior, social-emotional development, and/or math skills, a more comprehensive neuropsychological or psychoeducational evaluation will better suit your needs.

05

Is telehealth effective?

Many of our clients are seen via telehealth and make the same gains they'd make with in-person sessions. Telehealth isn't the best fit for everyone, though. Talk to your clinician to ensure telehealth is an appropriate treatment modality for your child.

06

Why don't you accept insurance?

We are an out-of-network provider and do not interface with insurance companies so that we may dedicate 100% of our time to our clients. As a private-pay practice, we have the freedom to evaluate and treat clients in the way that we feel is best for the individual in front of us.

07

What is your cancellation policy?

When you set up an appointment, we reserve a time just for you. We ask that you also reserve that time in your schedule. If you miss or cancel your appointment with less than 24 hours' notice, you will be charged the full amount of the session fee. This policy is in place out of respect for other clients and the clinician. By giving last-minute notice or no notice at all, you prevent someone else from obtaining services in your canceled time slot. Please see our treatment packet for more details.
